Backgammon basics: Hitting and Entering

One of the essential moves or plays when playing backgammon is called hitting and entering. It is considered as a very important attribute that should be learned and remembered by any player who wants to improve their skills in backgammon.A point that is occupied by one single checker of either a black or white color is called a blot. If an opposing checker lands on a blot, that said blot is hit and then placed on the bar.

Anytime a backgammon player has one or more checkers on the bar, the first thing that he should do is to enter the checker or checkers into the opposing home board. A checker is then entered by moving it to an open point that corresponds to one of the numbers of the rolled dice.

Let us say, for example, that a player rolls a 4 and a 6. He may then enter a checker on to either the opponents four point or six point just as long as the prospective point is not occupied by two or more of the opponent’s checkers.

If both of the points are not open then the player will lose his turn. If the player is successful in putting in some but not all of his checkers then he must enter as many checkers as he possibly can and then forfeit the rest of his turn.

After all of the player’s checkers have been entered any of the unused numbers on the dice will still need to be played. He can do this by either moving the checker that was entered or a different checker.
