Strategies, tips and stories about backgammon.

Recommended Reading for Backgammon Enthusiasts

There are countless books and readings that would be of large help to backgammon enthusiasts of different levels. The main concern that I see here is that some books may not be found in some local bookstores in many different countries. We all know that backgammon enthusiasts can be found all over the world so I thought that a short listing of good books that can be found online would be a good thing. Here are some recommended readings for backgammon enthusiasts. Try looking for them online when you can.

For beginners, one requisite is the book by Paul Magriel. Simply titled Backgammon, this book was published way back in 1976 and is a must for beginners. You can even find some of the originals in secondhand bookstores today (at least in the West). Some other good reads for beginners are Starting Out in Backgammon by Paul Lamford and 501 Essential Backgammon Problems by Bill Robertie.

For intermediate players, you might find the books above a little too basic. The classic tome for players at this level used to be Advanced Backgammon 1 and 2 by Bill Robertie. Some newer books are New Ideas in Backgammon by Kit Woolsey and Hal Heinrich and Boards, Blots and Double Shots by Norm Wiggins.

For the experts, there are many more challenging reads for you. Well known author Danny Kleinman has a LOT of books that will provide you with the right mix of math, psychology, and humor. Of course, Robertie still has his say at this level – try Modern Backgammon for a more in depth read.
