Motif Backgammon

These two words would not normally go together, would they? For some reason, when I first heard of motif backgammon, all I could think of was motifs for parties and big events such as weddings. However, there is really such a game as motif backgammon and judging from the popularity it has reached, then it is a very good game to play, especially online.

So what is motif backgammon all about? To tell the truth, it is just like the conventional backgammon game. The thing that makes it “different” is that it is basically a Java applet that you can load on any web browser. You can then play backgammon as soon as it loads.

With motif backgammon, you play against the computer – against Motif. Who is Motif? It is the program or tool that is used to create graphical user interfaces. It is used for systems running on the X Windows system on Unix or other systems which comply to POSIX. In effect, it can be used to create most anything but for our purposes, we are focusing on backgammon. Hence the name motif backgammon.

All you need to know is how to play the basic game of backgammon and you will be able to play against Motif. However, do know that this is one smart program. What it does is to analyze the board and based on the positions, it will compute for the BEST move that it can make. Ideally, that is what we are supposed to do but sometimes, excellent algorithms (like that of Motif’s) are hard to beat. As such, it would be a very good opponent to help you hone your skills further.
