Strategies, tips and stories about backgammon.

Backgammon For Germans

There are countless ways to play backgammon these days and even more venues to play the game.  Whether you are thinking about playing on a “real” board against a “real” person or you feel like playing on a virtual board against a virtual opponent, you have all the choices available.  And, if you are looking for a country-specific site, here is something for you – at least if you’re German.

Brettspielwelt is a German site offering more than 70 different kinds of board games.  And yes, backgammon is part of their offering.  I actually got wind of this site from an article on online games written by Skip Maloney.  In it he describes Brettspielwelt:

In English, Brettspielwelt means, literally, board game world (brett spiel welt). There has been some justifiable criticism leveled at the site for what is perceived as a generalized difficulty in figuring out just how to use it. This is a good thing in many ways, because the process tends to weed out your garden variety Internet jerk, who’s just poking around cyberspace looking for someone to harass, swear at or pick up. If, however, you possess a sincere desire to play a good game with a single or group of like-minded individuals, it is a terrific site.

It offers only two games that might be considered classics – backgammon and the ancient Chinese game of Go. The rest of the menu contains ‘Euro’ games, including very recent releases like Dominion, Kingsburg and Wikinger. If you don’t know these games, fear not. Once you get oriented onto the site, you’ll be able to locate rules and no end of people willing to teach them. Orientation, however, is a little tricky.

Sounds good to me. Not that I speak or read German but for those of you who do, then this might be the site that you have been looking for.
