Backgammon Social Held by Armenian Young Professionals

Bingo is almost synonymous to group socials but for the Young Professional group of the Boston AGBU (Armenian General Benevolent Union) chapter a game of luck just isn’t as fun as a game where skill comes in, which is why they had a backgammon tournament instead. The backgammon tournament was held in the AGBU house on Mt Auburn Street in Watertown last Friday at 8pm.
AGBU is a group that seeks to “preserve and promote the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs,” and since backgammon (called nardi or tavluh in Armenian) is a traditional game in Armenia then what better way to promote the Armenian culture than with fun and games?
The event did not draw a large a crowd as the organisers hoped for with only 8 people showing up on time although the night ended with more than double that coming by to either play or just socialize. Despite the small attendance the event was a success since those that attended had lots of fun, whether good at backgammon or newbie’s.
The young professional group that organised is composed of only 4 members but according to them their mailing list is pretty large. They also hold other events in line with AGBU’s main thrust such as fundraisers, an annual Cinco de Mayo party, and lectures on Armenian and Turkish relations.
